Matt

This is now my second entry for the AJ’s newsletter, so hopefully I’ll be able to give it a better crack this time.

We had a fantastic end of year at AJs. The Christmas lunch for the guy’s was awesome, and everyone enjoyed the time out. There was a real sense of the Christmas spirit around the place, which was helped by some Christmas CD’s, and the odd Christmas movie. Glad though that Christmas only comes once a year as some of the songs were repeated quite often! The New Year has started off well too, especially as we’re now about a quarter of the way through the year. Thing’s have been going well, and getting back into thing’s like the inter-day service T-Ball competition has been great. The AJ’s team has really thrived this year, and it’s great to see them retaining a good amount of skills from last year. And it’s been really encouraging to see the guy’s really build as a team, and the level of team work is really taking off.

RISK wrapped up nicely for the year last year. With everyone involved being great participants for the final block, being Canadian Canoeing.

This year I won’t be involved with the main arm of RISK, but I’ll still have a foot in the door being involved with some future plans for RISK. And with Lindsay still at the helm, it will all go fantastically no doubt.

I’ve maintained most of the community activities I was involved with last year. The library group is going well; it is however missing Laureen Thompson as she is suffering some health issues at the moment which has meant she hasn’t been for a while.

Following on from library on Monday morning, on a Monday afternoon I am now taking Andrew Martin, Wyn Wareing, and Paul Rogerson out to play pool. My lack of pool skills are being shown up here, with the guy’s easily outshining me in the doubles games we are playing. Wyn in particular has really shown his prowess at the game, and is pulling off some impressive shots.

Also I am in the process of trying to establish a new part-time cleaning job for a couple of the guy’s. At the moment it’s all about sorting out the finer details, so that the job is set-up and structured properly so that it is a fruitful venture. So I can’t really say too much about it right now, but hopefully in the next newsletter I’ll be able to convey more information.

John Piper and I are still heading around to Automan Automatics, for his part-time cleaning job. The job’s going as good as ever, and is still good to have a joke with John about the rugby, especially his support for Wellington in the super 14, when John’s from Canterbury. A recent funny point with the job was after John had been given a pack of schmint mints from the staff at the mechanics. He promptly put it in his pocket, and dealt with his pay from the job by putting that in his wallet. After he put his money away, he picked up the company’s door bell button that sits on their front bench, and was puzzled over the nature of what kind of treat it could be. It was all quickly resolved when John found the schmint pack in his pocket, and returned the doorbell.

Amy’s

My first few months at AJs have been enjoyable and this year I have had great experiences going out on various activities.

TBall The most exciting has been going to support at the Tball competition. Everyone has said that it is very competitive and this has proven to be true for the whole team, as often on the way to a game people will say things like “we’re going to waste them” and “we will kick their butts”. In the goal of winning, a real team spirit has emerged and skills of working as a team have increased each week, which is awesome to see.

Hula Hula is another activity that I go to with Margaret Wright, Marilyn Carr, Paul Ewing, and recently Mathew Dwight. Hula is a fun and surprisingly energetic dance. Margaret is no doubt the best at doing the Ami Ami .Marilyn has an excellent memory for the dance routines, Mathew has shown very good rhythm and loves to sing the songs and Paul has fun counting the beat to the dances with the Hawaiian Maracas.

Car cleaning I also support Denise Jackson at her car cleaning job. Denise has increased her skills each week and is showing skills of learning from direction. It is a great opportunity for her to work independently and where she has shown a good deal of initiative.

Hagley writing course I have been supporting Sharon Godinet at a writing course at Hagley College. The class is a great group of people who are friendly and the activities are very interactive and fun.

Workroom I have found it interesting to see all of the jobs that are worked on at AJs in the unit. There is a very warm and friendly atmosphere there, something that is valued as it makes coming to work a great place to be.
