R.I.S.K. Recreation Inspires Strength & Knowledge
The second year of the RISK Pilot Programme commenced on Wednesday 2 April. With a group of five students from the Kimi Ora Unit at Papanui High School, Annie and myself from AJ’s, met Clive Holgate at the Ropes Course at the South Brighton Domain.
As this was the first meeting of any of the team, we commenced with some name games and trust activities before moving on to some of the lower rope elements.
The group’s second outing was in and around the Botanical Gardens where we split in to two teams and undertook an Orienteering Course. After lunch it was to the mighty Avon where we set up a Tyrolean Traverse (a rope across the river). The object of this activity is to get all of the team members from one side to the other. All bar one team member attempted the activity and only two of the whole team didn’t get wet – some of us getting wetter than others! None of this fazed the group at all and an enjoyable time was had.
Our third outing as a group before the first term break was to the Woodend Christian Camp where the original intent was to go abseiling. The climbing tower was not entirely suitable but there was a flying fox. After a quick consultation with the team (the decision to change the focus activity was unanimous) we harnessed up and got in to it. When asked who would like to go first several hands went up. After trying to resolve with the impasse ‘paper, scissors, rock’ the old tried and trusted coin toss was used. The entire group (even Clive) had a go. One of the team who is not too keen of heights had several goes, well done.
On the way back to the car for lunch, three trampolines were encountered which were put to good use with much laughter and enjoyment!
Almost to the car, several horses were spotted in a paddock so we diverted and said good day to them and several pats later we had lunch. After lunch we played mini golf with ‘local rules’ being employed.
An awesome start to this journey with a really excellent group.
